At Dienst Custom Homes we believe strongly is continually improving our building practices as the industry evolves. Having our homes Energy Star certified is a good way for us to ensure that we are doing all that we can to stay at the top of our field. We built our first Energy Star home in 2002 and have been involved in the program ever since.
To qualify as an Energy Star home, the home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency. These guidelines have been created by the Environmental Protection Agency, and the homes are at least 15% more energy efficient than homes built to standard residential code. However, in reality the homes are often 20-30% more efficient than a standard home.
An Energy Star home has multiple features to improve home efficiency which in turn leads to better home quality, improved homeowner comfort, lower energy demands, and reduced air pollution:
- Effective Insulation – At Dienst Custom Homes we know that properly installed insulation in the floors, walls, and attic space ensures even temperatures throughout the home and reduced energy use. Ultimately this means a more comfortable home for our homeowners. We offer a couple of superior insulation products including Optima blown insulation and Icynene spray foam insulation.
- High Performance Windows – High end aluminum clad windows are the only windows you will find in a Dienst Custom Home. Jeldwen Windows and Doors make a wonderful product which is maintenance free and helps to keep the heat in during the winter and out during the summer. The Low E glass blocks damaging ultraviolet rays that can discolor furnishings and carpets.
- Tight Construction and Ducts – In our homes, any point of cold-air entry on the house will be caulked and sealed, a process which begins during framing when sill plate lumber is glued to the foundation itself. Sealing holes and cracks in the home and in the duct systems helps to reduce drafts, moisture, dust, pollen, and noise. These steps help to reduce utility payments and home maintenance, while at the same time improving indoor air quality in our homes.
- Efficient Heating and Cooling Equipment – At Dienst Custom Homes we never use less than 13 SEER units, and we provide options of upgrading to 14 and 15 SEER units. Energy-efficient heating and cooling systems use less energy to operate, are quieter, help to control indoor humidity levels, and improve the comfort in the home.
- Efficient Products – Energy Star homes are often equipped with other Energy Star qualified products such as light fixtures, fans, and appliances.
As a homeowner, you can feel good about buying an Energy Star home for a number of reasons including lower ownership costs, better home performance, environmental protection, and the fact that your home will be a smart investment with the Energy Star label becoming an increasingly valued feature. Dienst Custom Homes is proud of its association as an approved Energy Star Builder.
